What Happens To A Checked Bag After You Drop It

A checked bag disappears behind a rubber curtain and reappears on a carousel hours later. What happens between those two moments is a mostly automated routing process.
The tag is the routing instruction
The bag tag printed at check-in carries a ten-digit license plate number and a barcode. That number, not your name, identifies the bag throughout its journey.
The number links to a record holding your flight segments and final destination airport code. Every scanner along the route queries that record to decide where the bag goes next.
Many tags now also carry a radio frequency chip, which can be read without line of sight. That improves scan rates at points where a barcode may be obscured or damaged.
Screening happens inside the system
Checked bags in the United States pass through explosive detection machines operated by the Transportation Security Administration. The process is inline, meaning the bag continues on the belt during screening.
Most bags clear automatically. Those flagged by the machine divert to a station where an operator reviews the image, and a small fraction are opened for physical inspection.
A notice placed inside the bag indicates it was opened. Locks that are not agency-recognized may be cut, since screeners must be able to access the contents.
Sorting is a series of diverts
Beyond screening, the bag enters a sortation network of belts and tilt trays. Scanners read the tag at each decision point and a mechanism pushes the bag down the correct branch.
The branch ends at a make-up area where bags for a single flight accumulate in a cart or container. Ground crews load those directly into the aircraft hold.
Bags too large or oddly shaped for the belts, such as skis and instruments, are handled on a separate oversize path and scanned manually.
Connections are where bags go wrong
A bag on a nonstop flight is scanned relatively few times. A bag with a connection must be unloaded, rescanned, resorted and reloaded within the connection window.
If the inbound flight arrives late, the ground time can be shorter than the transfer takes. The bag then travels on the next available flight while the passenger continues.
This is why mishandling rates rise with tight connections and with itineraries crossing between airlines, where two separate baggage systems must hand off cleanly.
Tracing relies on the last scan
When a bag does not arrive, the airline searches by the license plate number and finds the most recent successful scan. That location tells the tracing team where it stalled.
Filing a report at the destination airport before leaving creates the record that drives delivery and any compensation. Airline policies on delivery and reimbursement vary and change.
