How PreCheck And Global Entry Differ
Two trusted traveler programs are frequently confused because both promise shorter lines. They address opposite ends of a trip and are administered by different agencies.
They solve different bottlenecks
Expedited departure screening applies at the security checkpoint before a domestic or international flight leaves. It shortens the process of getting from the terminal entrance to the gate.
Expedited arrival inspection applies after an international flight lands and you present yourself for entry to the United States. It shortens the customs and immigration process.
A traveler who never leaves the country gains nothing from the arrival program. A traveler who flies abroad rarely but departs weekly gains most from the departure program.
Enrollment differs in depth
The departure program is administered by the Transportation Security Administration and requires an application, a fingerprint appointment, and a background check against federal databases.
The arrival program is administered by Customs and Border Protection and adds an in-person interview with an officer, since it involves a determination about admissibility.
Because the arrival program's vetting is the more thorough of the two, enrollment in it customarily confers the departure benefit as well. The reverse does not hold.
The benefit is conditional, not guaranteed
Expedited screening is indicated by a marker printed on the boarding pass. If your membership number is not in the reservation before check-in, the marker does not appear.
Even with the marker, screening authorities retain discretion to route any passenger through standard screening. The program reduces the probability of a full process, not the possibility.
Not every airport or terminal operates a dedicated lane at all hours. At small stations and during off-peak periods the lane may simply be closed.
Airline participation matters
The departure program works only with participating carriers. A ticket on an airline outside the program will not carry the indicator regardless of your enrollment status.
The list of participating airlines has grown over time but is not universal, and it particularly affects itineraries beginning on a foreign carrier departing a US airport.
Booking through a third party can also break the link if the membership number is not transmitted to the operating carrier's reservation system.

Additional trusted traveler programs address land borders with Canada and Mexico, and separate arrangements exist for certain foreign nationals entering the United States.
Membership periods, fees, eligibility criteria and reciprocal benefits change over time and differ by citizenship and residency status.
The administering agencies publish current terms, and those official pages rather than secondhand summaries are what a traveler should consult before applying or renewing.
