Interstate route numbers are not arbitrary. The system encodes direction, relative position and the relationship between a spur and its parent route.

Parity encodes direction

Odd numbers run generally north and south. Even numbers run generally east and west. This holds across the primary network with only minor exceptions.

Numbers increase from west to east for odd routes and from south to north for even routes, which is the opposite of the older US highway system's convention.

That inversion was deliberate, intended to reduce confusion between an interstate and a US route carrying the same number in the same area.

Where a conflict would still have arisen, planners simply skipped the number, which is why certain two-digit designations were never assigned.

Multiples of five are the long-haul corridors

Routes ending in zero or five were designated as the major transcontinental and coast-to-coast corridors, spaced across the country as the network's spine.

The remaining two-digit numbers fill in between them, serving regional rather than national movements.

Knowing this lets a driver infer that a route ending in five running north and south is likely a long corridor rather than a short connector.

Three digits describe a relationship

A three-digit interstate takes the last two digits from its parent route. The leading digit describes what kind of connection it is.

An even leading digit indicates a loop or belt that returns to the parent, typically circling a city. An odd leading digit indicates a spur that connects to the parent at one end only.

Because leading digits cycle, the same three-digit number can appear in multiple states, which is why they are not unique nationally.

Signage resolves the ambiguity by state, and mapping systems treat the state and route number together as the identifier.

Exits are numbered by mileage

Most states number exits by the milepost at which they occur, measured from the state line or the route's southern or western end within the state.

This makes distance calculable directly: the difference between two exit numbers approximates the miles between them.

A minority of states historically used sequential numbering, and conversions to mileage-based numbering have been carried out over time.

The system has known exceptions

A few routes violate parity because their alignment changed after designation, or because a number was assigned for political rather than geometric reasons.

Some corridors are numbered as interstates but are not physically connected to the rest of the network, including routes in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Designations are set through a process involving state departments of transportation and the federal highway authority, and new routes continue to be added, so current state route logs are the definitive record.
